In a remote stretch of untamed Indonesian forest along a spectacular coastline where collapsed roads might deter even intrepid travellers, a sign of things to come incongruously advertises “land for sale”. A real estate agency has marked out an area amid thick, tropical vegetation where investors can still claim a piece of Kuta.
Kuta Lombok, that is, not its neighbour across the Lombok Strait, Kuta Bali. It’s serendipity: the name plonks southern Lombok on the tourist map by drawing on people’s memories of the more familiar Kuta, a name that means fortress.
